Rates for text proofreading services

The cost of proofreading services is based on an evaluation of the quality of the source material (carried out free of charge), and starts at $0.06 (depending upon the language) per source word, if the text does not require any additional editing. Editing of poor-quality texts or texts requiring specialized editing are priced higher than normal text editing, proofreading and emendation services, starting at $0.09 (depending upon the language) per source word.

What is proofreading?

Normally, by "proofreading" people understand simple copyreading and correction of grammatical, syntactic and punctuation mistakes (typos, omitted letters, punctuation marks, etc.), i.e. changing forms in the text without changing the sense. More often than not people use proofreading to check texts following translation or copywriting.

Besides correcting mistakes, however, the editor often comes across the need to carry out more extensive text editing—correction of the text at the sentence and paragraph level with the aim of bringing it in line with normal modes of expression. In working with highly specialized texts the editor is required to clarify and correct mistakes specific to that particular field (correct use of terminology, description of processes). All this is known as scientific and technical editing. In these cases the copy editing requires thorough study of the material and immersion in the technical aspects of the issue in question.
